The Celtics will take an 11-man contingent to Los Angeles tonight for the annual Summer League. Coach Chris Ford & Co. selected the squad after last night's rookie camp finale, and there weren't many surprises.

The veterans will be Stojko Vrankovic and Joe Kleine. They will be joined by Brian Shaw, who is scheduled to play the first two games (Saturday and Sunday) and later by Rick Fox. Michael Smith also is a possibility, despite a sore ankle.

As for the free agents and rookies, the team will take Anderson Hunt of UNLV, Patrick Tompkins of Wisconsin, Steven Thompson, the former Syracuse star who played in the CBA last year, Joe Anderson of St. Francis, Pete Myers, the NBA journeyman, Dave Popson, an unrestricted free agent who thus doesn't count as a veteran, John Crotty, the point guard from Virginia, shooting guard Jean Derouillere of Kansas State and Kentucky forward Reggie Hanson.

Hunt heats up

Hunt finally showed why he might warrant more than just a casual look. In last night's final session, he was hitting the outside shot and also doing a commendable job at point guard, his position of the evening. "I'm starting to get in the groove," he said "LA is going to help me a lot. Then I'm just going home to work on the weights and I hope that by October, I'll have a job." There also is interest in Hunt in Washington and San Antonio . . . Larry Bird returned to Indiana yesterday. On Monday, he made a surprise appearance to break some bread with Dave Gavitt. He told Channel 5 his rehab was going fine and that he might even be able to play some golf and do some light shooting in a month . . . Dennis Johnson was on hand last night . . . Dee Brown called in sick and missed the night session.

No shot with Sixers

Melvin Cheatum's agent was at yesterday's workout (though his client was not) and said the ex-Alabama star had indeed sustained a sore wrist while working out with the Sixers. And he said that the injury, not Philly's disappointment in Cheatum's play, was the reason his client was not taken to LA with the Sixers.
